Freud analyzed the mind and behavior through his iceberg analogy. The conscious is at the surface, the preconscious and Ego are right below the surface, the superego is below the Ego, and lastly is the Id and then the unconscious. Awareness is the tip of the iceberg and the unconscious is hidden below the water. The Ego is the largely conscious part of personality. It mediates among the demands of id, superego, and reality and operates on the reality principle. Farther below lies the superego, representing the internalized ideals and providing standards for judgment and future aspirations. At the bottom, way beneath the surface, lies the id. The id contains unconscious psychic energy that strives to satisfy basic sexual and aggressive drives. The id operates on the pleasure principle, unlike the ego, and strives for immediate gratification.
